Review:

All the way back in 2007 we saw the surprise smash that was Zack Snyder’s 300, based on the Frank Miller comics of the same name, where the combination of sandals, six-packs and stylized violence struck a chord with audiences, turning it into one of the most successful films of the year. So it is no surprise that this belated prequel/sequel, this time directed by Noam Murro, has arisen. The film once again recreates the epic sense of bloodshed and ferocity of the Greco-Persian War through the use of sumptuous visuals and the raw dramatic impact of its leading heroes and villains.

While 300 told the story of the Spartans at the battle of Thermopylae on land, Rise of an Empire follows the Athenians as they fight the Persians at sea in the battle of Artemisium. The plot involves events before and after that of 300 and at times they run in parallel. Led by their general Themistokles (Sullivan Stapleton) the Greek navy must overcome death-defying odds in order to defeat the sprawling Persian navy lead by their ruthless commander Artemsia (Eva Green), who means to ultimately erase Athens from history.

Visually similar to 300, Rise of an Empire is not afraid to tone up the violence and bloodshed but at the same time lends itself to some stunning action set pieces, including a slow-motion fiery sea battle that has to be seen to be truly believed. Eva Green in particular, takes center stage as the film’s villainous antagonist, bringing the film to life with her extreme acts, ambitions as well as her ability to manipulate and dominate the men in her charge. So, whether you loved 300 or just need to get you latest fix of some epic, brutal action know that Rise of an Empire will not fail to surpass expectations.
