Sightseers - Thursday, Week 1
Sightseers, the third offering from Kill List director Ben Wheatley, is a ‘pitch black comedy’ that will leave the viewer unsure whether to laugh or cry. Alice Lowe and Steve Oram, who also co-wrote the screenplay, star as Tina and Chris, a young couple whose countryside holiday spirals horribly out of control.
The film begins with Chris deciding that he needs to show Tina his world, and whisk her away from the sheltered life she’s been living. She is thrilled to escape from the watchful eye of her overbearing mother, and she and Chris hit the M1 in their battered caravan with the innocent intention of sampling the finest tourist attractions Yorkshire has to offer.
The Sessions - Tuesday, Week 4
"A man in an iron lung who wishes to lose his virginity contacts a professional sex surrogate with the help of his therapist and priest."
Beautiful Creatures - Thurday, Week 6
As the great Bard told us, “The course of love never did run smooth” and there is no exception for our newest star-crossed lovers, Lena and Ethan, in the latest offering of the tween fantasy-romance genre to be taken from the printed word to screen: Beautiful Creatures.
Rumours are spreading in the stiflingly small town of Gatlin of mysterious new girl, Lena Duchannes (Alice Englert), an alleged relative of the town’s recluse, Ravenwood. With her eccentric ways (i.e. reading actual books) and odd clothing choices, she is quickly marginalised by the cookie-cutter mean girls of Gatlin High. Yet for Ethan Wate (Alden Ehrenreich), who can’t wait to move out into the wider world, Lena is a breath of fresh air from the small-town mind-set of his peers.
