Review:

Avengers Assemble is the culmination of Marvel’s cinematic work over the last four years, bringing together Iron Man, Hulk, Thor and Captain America for a spectacular and truly mind-blowing adaptation of the comic of all comics.

When Thor’s (adopted) brother Loki gains possession of the Tesseract – first discovered by Red Skull in Captain America: The First Avenger – he finally has the power to transport the Chitauri, an alien army, to Earth on a mission to destroy. Alongside Black Widow (introduced in Iron Man 2) and Hawkeye (first seen in Thor), the four superheroes are brought together by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) to face this terrible threat. But between preventing the world from falling into hostile hands and managing the six’s clashing egos, Fury has his work cut out for him.

Literally star-studded, Avengers Assemble features knock-out performances from regulars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johanson and Samuel L. Jackson as well as a deep and thought-provoking portrayal of the Hulk from newcomer Mark Ruffalo. Each suit up with confidence and bring out a personal depth to their characters missing from many action movies.

At the helm of this incredible ship is Joss Whedon as both director and screen writer. Whedon, famous for cult-classics Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Serenity and the more comical Dr. Horrible’s Sing-along Blog, reveals his inner fanboy in dealing with the characters, storylines and world he so clearly adores with unique flair. The script is dazzling, somehow managing to devote screen time to each of the six main characters without making the film twelve and a half hours long, as well as creating dynamic dialogue scenes which carry just as much tension as the enormous action set pieces. Whedon’s trademark humour and style pervade every inch of the film, and his enthusiasm cannot help but inspire the same reaction in an audience.

So make sure you suit up and assemble for this unmissable epic.
