Review:

Terminator Salvation is set in 2018, following the apocalypse of the machines, where a small human resistance led by John Connor (Christian Bale) continue to fight to overthrow the latest editions of terminators, who hunt the humans with the mechanical brutality that made the original films so compelling. The creators of the terminators, SkyNet, are creating modern threats to the resistance, revealed when the resistance capture Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington) who has a dark secret, a twist that adds a new dimension to this classic franchise. Add to this the need to protect Connor’s father, Kyle Rees, and the film has enough elements to keep any audience entertained, even without the mind-blowing special effects that accompany them.

Despite stellar performances from established big hitters such as Helena Bonham Carter and Bale, on moody form as Connor, the one to watch is Anton Yelchin playing a young Kyle Rees. Already excellent in this year’s Star Trek he delivers again to give the film its most stimulating character and is definitely one to watch for the future. By giving characters like Rees a central role fans of the previous films are guaranteed familiarity but there are enough fresh characters to make it a great stand-alone film, with the plot well explained so even newcomers to the story will understand what is going on.

Therefore if you love great effects, a thought-provoking plot and cameos from Austria’s most famous muscle man then make sure you see Terminator Salvation, as with the major success of this franchise you can be sure that it will “be back” soon in the future!
