Review:

Mike Nichols’ Closer is a stimulating movie based on a play about the infatuation, drama, love and desertion of two couples who come into each others’ lives and alter them forever.

Alice (Natalie Portman) and Dan (Jude Law) are a relatively new couple who meet when Alice gets hit by a car. Things are going well until Dan has his photo taken for his new book by Anna (Julia Roberts), they kiss, unaware that Alice is nearby and knows exactly what is going on.

After Anna has refused to see Dan again, he enters a sex chat forum and arranges for Larry (Clive Owen) to meet Anna at the London Aquarium, oblivious to the fact that the two will actually get together. What ensues is a fascinating sequence of crossing paths that ultimately ends in all four people getting hurt by one another.

Set in London and New York City, this is a motion picture that has quite literally had awards thrown at it and it is obvious why.

With one of Hollywood’s best ensemble casts of recent times, Closer is definitely worth seeing. Julia Roberts delights in an icy role that was originally offered to Cate Blanchett and Jude Law is refreshing after recent criticism for some of his film choices over the past year. The excellent Natalie Portman and James Bond contender, Clive Owen, show effortlessly why they received Golden Globes for their performances. Closer is an intelligent and witty movie, and providing you are not adverse to graphic sexual dialogue, you will not come away disappointed.
